Kit Armstrong, Pianist & Composer | MENGINO - artists management unlimited: opera singers, conductors, directors, orchestras and vocal ensembles
Kit Armstrong is one of the most remarkable phenomena in today's world of classical music. Having been celebrated early on for his intelligence, musicality and technical skill, he is now recognized as a mature artist firmly set on the path to an extraordinary career. While his technique is flawless, his precocity and his intuitive musicality give him a profound connection to the music that is simultaneously analytical and deeply emotional. The Independent commented on his "relaxed and expressive authority", hailing him as "a budding new member of the pianistic pantheon" and as "a composer to watch".
Today Kit Armstrong is firmly established both as a pianist and as a composer. He has made recital appearances at the Musikverein in Vienna, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Wigmore Hall in London, the Zurich Tonhalle, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Cologne Philharmonie, the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg and the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. During the last seasons, his Bach-Liszt program was described by Alfred Brendel as figuring "among the most satisfying piano playing I have witnessed in recent years." Noteworthy orchestral projects include concerts with Esa-Pekka Salonen and tours with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Christoph von Dohna%u0301nyi, the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester under Riccardo Chailly and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra under Robin Ticciati. An avid chamber musician, he recorded a CD together with violinist Andrej Bielow and cellist Adrian Brendel. Among other works, it features a composition by Kit Armstrong and was released by the record label Genuin in 2012. His awards include six Morton Gould Young Composer Awards from the ASCAP Foundation, including the ASCAP Foundation Charlotte V. Bergen Scholarship, which he received in 2007 for his composition Struwwelpeter: Character Pieces for Viola and Piano.
His long awaited debut solo CD was released in September 2013 on Sony Classical. It features his own Fantasy on B-A-C-H, Chorale Preludes by J. S. Bach, Bach's first Partita and a selection of the Musica ricercata by G. Ligeti.
Kit Armstrong studied at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He studied piano with Mark Sullivan, Eleanor Sokoloff, Claude Frank, the late Benjamin Kaplan, and composition with Michael Martin. Kit Armstrong has studied with Alfred Brendel since the age of 13 and Brendel continues to have a profound influence over him as teacher and mentor. Brendel has described Kit Armstrong as the greatest talent he has ever encountered. The singular relationship between the two artists was captured in the documentary Set the Piano Stool on Fire by British film maker Mark Kidel.
Kit Armstrong grew up in Los Angeles, London and Paris. He had his first encounter with the piano at the age of five and began studying natural sciences at university at the age of seven. He holds a Bachelor's degree in music from the Royal Academy of Music, London and a Master's degree in mathematics from the University of Paris, VI.
